TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout Winner, Yandro Ulloa’s 1996 SVT Cobra Mustang

The 1996 SVT Cobra Mustang was a groundbreaking machine that ushered in the era of DOHC performance for Ford. The 305-horsepower mod-motor Cobra provided a huge jump in performance over the 215-horsepower Mustang GT. It could rev cleanly to 7,000 rpm and sounded amazing, and a good pilot could row the gears into the mid-13s. Shifting Gears to Glory at the TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout

One of the coolest and most challenging events on the NMRA (National Mustang Racers Association) tour is the TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout. The most recent event was held at the 25th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout in Bradenton, Florida, February 28 – March 3.

To qualify, racers must compete in the QA1 True Street class, which involves completing the 25-mile road tour, then making a trio of runs. Anyone can claim to be the best stick shift driver when it comes to drag racing. Just like anyone can say that their car is the quickest. But until the win light comes on and the trophy is hoisted, those are just empty words.

That’s why TREMEC, together with the National Mustang Racers Association (NMRA), created the TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout seven years ago. The first of two TREMEC Stick Shift Shootouts in 2019 will take place at the 25th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout in Bradenton, Florida, February 28 – March 3. While the SEMA Show primarily serves as an automotive aftermarket industry trade event, it has become one of the world’s biggest and most diverse custom car shows. Builders large and small spend months, and even years designing and building vehicles that showcase the products of companies exhibiting at the show – as well as the builder’s craftsmanship and skill.

A common thread with the most noteworthy and attention getting is the transmission used. While you’ll see a variety of automatic slush boxes in some builds, for builds where a manual transmission is used, most of the time there will be a TREMEC 5- or 6-speed under the vehicle’s transmission tunnel. Jeff McCool rolled into the Beech Bend Raceway Park for the 2018 Nitto Tire NMRA All-Ford Finals with one thing in mind—win the TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout with his 5.0L Coyote-powered 1981 Mustang Coupe.

A year earlier, Jeff was a 2017 Stick Shift Shootout finalist, but he fell short and went home with the runner-up prize. With the format changed for 2018, power, consistency and quick reactions would equalize the field. Jeff was poised to compete, and his TREMEC-equipped Ford Mustang was ready to do its part. TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout – Bowling Green 2018

TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout gear jammers were thrust into center ring at the Nitto Tire NMRA All-Ford World Finals September 27-30, 2018, at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This was the second TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout of 2018.

The shootout is open to any NMRA True Street participant using a street-type manual transmission. From new to old, any stick-shift equipped Ford vehicle can be entered and will have the special opportunity to qualify. TREMEC was founded on April 12, 1964. The genesis was to manufacture transmissions in Mexico for Ford, GM and Chrysler.
