For owners of 2019-2025 manual transmission-equipped S550 Ford Mustangs, TREMEC now offers an updated Magnum XL 6-speed transmission that delivers increased performance capability and improved shift feel while retaining factory rev matching and backup camera functionality. Designed as a true plug-and-play upgrade, the updated TREMEC Magnum XL gives Mustang enthusiasts a direct-fit performance transmission without sacrificing key OEM features.

The new updated TREMEC Magnum XL gives owners of 2015-2023 manual-transmission equipped S550 Ford Mustang the best manual transmission upgrade possible for their cars. In addition to its 700 lb-ft torque rating, the updated Magnum XL features plug and play capability so the factory rev matching capability of the car functions just as it does with the stock transmission, as well as the factory backup camera to function.

“The S550 Ford Mustang is one of the most versatile performance platforms Ford has ever produced,” said Mike Kidd, TREMEC Aftermarket Business Unit Manager. “Factory rev matching is a valuable feature for drivers who want to maximize the performance capability of their Mustang. With the updated Magnum XL, owners can upgrade to a significantly stronger and more performance-oriented transmission while retaining important factory functionality like rev matching and the backup camera.”

The 2005-and-newer Mustangs that utilize a factory remote-shifter design intended to reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) for improved comfort and a quieter driving experience. While effective at reducing cabin noise and vibration, the factory remote-shifter system can compromise shifting precision and tactile feel in high-performance driving applications. The TREMEC Magnum XL is derived from the legendary TREMEC Magnum 6-speed transmission, and TREMEC engineered the Magnum XL with a unique extended tailshaft housing that allows the transmission to bolt directly into S197 and S550 Mustang platforms while eliminating the factory remote-shifter arrangement. The direct-mount short-throw shifter provides significantly improved shift precision and feel while maintaining the factory shifter location within the center console.

The TREMEC Magnum XL is based on the TREMEC Magnum 6-speed family of aftermarket transmissions. It uses the same main body and gearing with the addition of a unique tailshaft housing that allows direct fitment into 2005-2025 Mustangs using the remote shifter design from the factory. The Magnum XL eliminates the remote shifter system, replacing it with a direct connection short-throw shifter for precise and fast shifting.

In addition to enhanced shift quality, the Magnum XL is engineered to handle substantially higher power levels than the factory transmission. Rated for 700 lb-ft of torque capacity, the Magnum XL is ideal for naturally aspirated, supercharged and turbocharged Mustang builds. The transmission also features dual-cone synchronizers designed to support smooth, high-RPM shifting up to 8,000 RPM — especially well-suited for the high-revving Coyote V8 engine.

All Magnum XL kits include a bellhousing , shifter, shift ball with shift pattern and a replacement transmission crossmember for straightforward installation.

Ford introduced the S550 Mustang platform for the 2015 model year and added factory rev-matching capability beginning in 2019. The system automatically blips the throttle during downshifts to synchronize engine speed and transmission input speed, helping deliver smoother and faster gear changes during aggressive driving. Traditionally, this technique required manual heel-toe throttle input from the driver.
The updated Magnum XL fully retains factory rev matching functionality, allowing drivers to continue using the OEM features exactly as intended. In addition, the transmission preserves full operation of the factory backup camera system without requiring additional modules or modifications.

The TREMEC Magnum 6-speed series of transmissions uses specially designed, precision cut helical gears and double-cone synchronizers that go through a rigorous heat-treating process to give them maximum strength. TREMEC dual-cone synchronizer system gives the Magnum smooth shifts and the capability of shifting up to 8,000 engine RPM, especially suited for the high-RPM performance of the Ford Coyote V8 engines.

The TREMEC Magnum transmission family utilizes precision-cut helical gears and heat-treated internal components engineered for exceptional durability and shift quality. Combined with TREMEC’s dual-cone synchronizer technology, the Magnum XL delivers smooth, consistent high-RPM shifting capability while maintaining the strength required for serious street and track performance applications.
TREMEC validated the updated Magnum XL using an S550 Mustang test vehicle that accumulated thousands of miles under varied driving conditions. The development vehicle featured suspension upgrades from BMR Suspension and a 3.0L supercharger system from VMP Performance to further evaluate transmission durability and drivability in higher-horsepower applications.
