Owners of 3rd and 4th gen GM F-body cars don’t have to search through the salvage yards and classifieds any longer to find a usable T-56 6-speed. The new TREMEC Magnum-F 6-speed gives owners of the late-model Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird a bolt-in manual transmission option capable of handling the power output of modern, high-performance engines.
The Magnum F was designed specifically for these cars, as well as other late-model high-performance cars. Owners of Camaros and Firebirds who wanted to run a 6-speed previously had to search for salvage T-56s equipped with the F-body–specific tailshaft housing that could accommodate the torque arm mount. This has become a more difficult quest, as the supply of original F-body T-56s has dwindled. The TREMEC Magnum-F solves these problems as a direct-fit design for 3rd and 4th gen F-bodies.
The TREMEC Magnum-F is superior to the original T-56s in 4th gen F-body cars (click here to read our blog post detailing the differences between a TREMEC Magnum and T-56). Owners of both Gen II LT- and LS-powered 4th gen F-body cars will be able to use the TREMEC Magnum-F without an aftermarket torque arm relocation mount. The TREMEC Magnum-F has the TREMEC Magnum 6-speed’s increased main case webbing for more strength and rigidity, plus double- and triple-cone synchronizers for smooth high-rpm shifts and the ability to handle more power. It is rated for applications with up to 700 lb-ft of torque.
The TREMEC Magnum-F has a unique shifter location that allows for extremely good fitment in the 3rd and 4th gen F-bodies, as we well as applications that require a shifter position that is between the regular Magnum and the Magnum-XL. The Magnum-F is also shorter in overall length than either of the other Magnum variations. Prime candidates for a TREMEC Magnum-F include LS-swapped late-models of all varieties, sport-compact applications such as A80 Supras and FD RX-7s.
Internally, the TREMEC Magnum-F features increased face-width on all gears, a combination of double- and triple-cone synchronizers, enhanced webbing in the main case and provisions for a cooler circuit. Best of all, TREMEC Magnum-F components are brand-new, and the transmission comes with a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.
